Money-Saving Tips for China

$

Fly indirect (via Seoul, Tokyo, or Hong Kong) and save 20-30% on long-haul flights.

$

Travel in November or early December: flights drop to $750, hotels are half price.

$

Use high-speed trains instead of flights between nearby cities. Beijing-Shanghai is 4.5 hours for $90.

$

Eat where locals eat. A bowl of Lanzhou noodles costs $2 and is better than most hotel breakfasts.

$

Book hotels on Chinese platforms (Trip.com, Meituan) for lower prices than Booking.com or Agoda.

$

Avoid Golden Week and CNY. Prices triple and availability vanishes. No discount is worth the crowds.

$

Use Didi (Chinese Uber) instead of taxis. Fixed pricing, no haggling, English interface.

$

Buy a local SIM card at the airport ($10-20 for 30 days of data). Free WiFi is patchy outside hotels.
