Overview

Tibet's travel season runs May through October, when daytime temperatures reach 15-25°C and the mountain roads are open. Summer (July-August) is the peak, with the clearest views of Everest and the Shoton Festival in Lhasa. From November to April, many passes and the road to Everest Base Camp close, and temperatures plunge below freezing at night. This is the one region where 'best time' is a hard seasonal constraint, not a preference.

Weather by Season

Spring (May)

5-18°C

Roads reopen, flowers bloom across the plateau. Fewer tourists than summer.

Summer (Jun-Aug)

15-25°C

Warm days, cool nights. Peak season with the clearest Everest views and the Shoton Festival.

Autumn (Sep-Oct)

5-20°C

Dry, sunny, and spectacular. Some argue the best light of the year.

Winter (Nov-Apr)

-10 to 10°C

Most roads close, including to Everest Base Camp. Only for the hardy and well-prepared.

Tibet FAQs

Do I need a permit to visit Tibet?

Yes. Foreign travelers need a Tibet Travel Permit, plus an Alien Travel Permit for beyond-Lhasa areas and a Military Permit for Everest Base Camp. Book through a registered tour operator who arranges these.

Can I visit Everest Base Camp in winter?

No - the road to EBC closes between roughly November and April due to snow. Plan your Tibet trip between May and October if EBC is a priority.

How do I avoid altitude sickness?

Spend 2-3 nights acclimatizing in Lhasa (3,650m) before traveling higher. Drink water, avoid alcohol, ascend gradually, and consider Diamox with medical advice.
